National Masturbation Frequency

I needed to pull a credible source for masturbation frequency today. While it’s getting a bit old, I pulled from Indiana University’s 2009 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior and tossed the data into a chart so I could better understand it. Thought you might like to see it. This is a report of masturbation in the last year. NSSHB also reports past month, past year, and lifetime with about 20% of women reported never having masturbated in their lifetime (drops as low as about 6% for men).

I would love to know what the numbers would be today—almost a decade later.

A 2017 Swedish survey of 18-22 year olds((Wiebke Driemeyer, Erick Janssen, Jens Wiltfang & Eva Elmerstig (2017). Masturbation Experiences of Swedish Senior High School Students: Gender Differences and Similarities, The Journal of Sex Research, 54:4-5, 631-641, DOI: 10.1080/00224499.2016.1167814 ))  reported 99% of the guys and 86% of the ladies reported having masturbated (lifetime). This is much higher than the 2009 NSSHB data (women: in 18-19 year olds 66% have and 20-24 year olds report 77% have—men: 18-19 year olds report 86% have and 20-24 year olds report 92% have). While it is possible the difference in country explains the numbers, I believe the eight years difference likely contributes heavily.
